Summary

The article is devoted to the philosophical and aesthetic analysis of the concept of pictorial representation of the Divine in Byzantine theology of the IV-V centuries. The arguments of Byzantine Church Fathers in favor of visual anthropomorphic representation of God and the saints have been analyzed. It outlines the main provisions of the concept of the ontology of the image in the early Byzantine theology. It is proved that from this period the theoretical theology became the main factor that ideologically directed church art and inspired its creators, contributing to the approval of the sacred status of art in the Christian culture. Icon was firmly established as a sacred way of proving the historical truth of the Incarnation; it was associated with the very essence of the Christian faith professing not only through the word, but also through visualization; that is, has been recognized by the equivalence of verbal and visual representation of the Divine.
