Summary

The fragment of the Gospel Mt 16: 16-19 in the history of the Church was interpreted diversely. More than once this text was adapted to the specific needs of the Church: dogmatic, apologetic or organizational. The deep symbolism of the dialogue of Jesus with Peter opened and continues to open new interpretative possibilities. This article examines the pericope from the point of view of the living environment and the expectations and religious beliefs of the disciples of Jesus and Himself Christ. What is the Church and how should we understand the concept of the Church? In what context does Christ use this word? Attention is drawn to the main phrases, words and concepts in this fragment.

Key words: Church, Messiah, cliff, Jesus Christ, ap. Peter.
