Summary

Theotokos of Pochayiv occupies an important place in the history of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, especially given the nationwide honoring of the shrine. However, for a long time, its separate liturgical honoring was limited to general liturgical services. The liturgical service and the Akathist to the Pochayiv icon were officially approved only since 1883, a half century after Pochayiv Monastery received the status of Lavra. Instead, as of today, the history of the liturgical honoring of Theotokos of Pochayiv is virtually unknown not only to the general public, but also to researchers who are interested in issues of church history and hymnography. The reason for its unpopularity is that the issue of liturgical honoring of the icon has never been raised in research literature. The mentioned issue is unresearched and raises the need for further study. The aim of the article is an attempt to make systems analysis of the available material on liturgical honoring of Theotokos of Pochayiv from the outset and thereby to fill shortcoming of scientific studies on selected topics. The tasks of the article lie in revealing the history of liturgical honoring of Theotokos of Pochayiv formation as well as the history of writing the liturgical service and the Akathist for its honoring, meanwhile to emphasize on authorship of mentioned liturgical services and to highlight the author’s significant contribution to occurrence of mentioned liturgical texts. The Transfer of the icon from Anna Hoiska castle and defence of the Monastery during the Polish–Ottoman War іn 1675 were the beginning of solemn celebrations in Pochayiv and initiated special festal worships. The Transfer of the icon to Pochayiv appears and celebrated on September 8 / 21 on Nativity of Mary, and the second on July 23 / August 5 as a celebration of Mother of God’s Victory over the Turkish Tatar siege of the Monastery. It is most probable that some liturgical prayers were already composed and celebrations of the mentioned events began after the transfer of the icon or protection of the Monastery from Turkish invasion. Nevertheless, the official liturgical honoring has been known only since the late 19th century. Formerly, all the liturgical services to the miracle-working icon at Pochayiv Monastery were general. Protoiereus Andrii Khoinatskyi (1837–1888) was the author of the liturgical service and the Akathist to the Pochayiv icon. He was a graduate and lecturer at Volyn Theological Seminary, which at that time was located in Kremenets city nearby the Pochayiv Lavra. Consequently, the author was well acquainted with the life and shrines of Pochayiv Monastery. After repeated refusals by the St. Petersburg Theological Censorship Committee to publish and give permission for liturgical use of hymnographical texts to Theotokos of Pochayiv, the publication became possible only 10 years after in 1883 through the intercession of Volyn Archbishop Tykhon Pokrovskyi, Holy Archimandrite of Pochayiv Lavra. The service was published already in 1884 and was held that year on July 23 / August 5 on the «victory holiday» by the author of this service – protoiereus Andrii Khoinatskyi. The prospect of further exploration of this topic is in the necessity of philological analysis of mentioned services, since the moment of their creation up to the present times they have undergone significant changes. Special emphasis should be placed on the modern Ukrainian hymnography which is needed by Pochayiv shrines and its creation requires the reference to its historical basis.
