Summary

The article reveals the interpretation of man made by Augustine the Blessed in his autobiographical work “Confession”, which is a narrative about the experience of the cultural and religious formation of the human person, it contains a deep analysis of the author’s inner world, reveals the practice of communicating with himself as with another, and creating of himself, which passes under a sign of dialogue with God. By his own example of a person who seeks out the meaning of life, Augustine showed that this meaning lies in knowing God and living with Him.
In Augustine, everything passes through man and everything converges in man. Man is shown in his existential trouble, tension between time and eternity, good and moral evil, individual loneliness and the desire and need of life in society. Augustine called human life a constant search for his own path between heaven and earth, between the past and the eternal. Through his mind, free will, the possibility of knowing the truth, through his love man for Augustine is the image of God, or rather the place – the presence of God, which must be sought in the human soul. Referring to deep reflection on the basis of the knowledge gained, the Bishop of Hipponicius considered the structure of human existence, regarded it as a kind of reflection, and even as a synthesis of the world created by God. Therefore, he constantly referred man to God, which, in his belief, was the best way to understand human existence and its realization.
In “Confession” of Augustine the Blessed anthropology is a topic that also reveals his understanding of the world and God. Augustine always credited Human Being to values, emphasizing the importance of the human mind for the knowledge of the truth as the causes of happiness, the basis of which is the combination with God. The man for Augustine is imago Dei, which is understood not only as an image, but also as the place of God’s stay, which must be sought in the human soul. As an integral element of the rational nature of man, he also points to the free will, understanding it ontologically and distinguishing it from freedom in the sense of the internal autonomy of the human spirit given to man. According to Augustine, a man can make a choice between good and evil, but when he wants to choose good, he needs the favor of God. God honors human freedom. Among all the created existence in the “Confession”, a person occupies a special place, associated with its development and dynamism, but always in close association with the Creator.

Key words: Augustine the Blessed, “Confession”, God, external man, inner man, sin, will.
