Summary

The article deals with the liturgical traditions relating to the souls of the dead, fate of a man beyond the grave, prayers for the repose of the souls of the faithful Christians. The historical evidences of prayers, alms and fasts in the name of the deceased, texts of prayers and the deacon’s proclamations «for our brothers who died in Christ» which contain requests from the widely used prayers are also described (V ct). Importance of the Divine Liturgy for the dead, their mentioning at the offertory, rules of conduct of the faithful at the graves of the dead, liturgical rites for repose of the souls on the 3rd, 9th, 40th days and their meaning are explained.
