Summary
Shepherding and the special inclination of the Jews to the development of animal husbandry is known to every reader of the Bible. The word “shepherd”, “shepherding” in the Scriptures is mentioned literally and figuratively, especially in the book of Jeremiah (Jer. 2: 8; 3:15; 10:21) and other sacred books of Revelation. The word “shepherd” is often used figuratively, sometimes in reference to the rulers of the nations, the clergy, and sometimes in relation to the Divine Person, the Lord God. This may be based on an analogy or similarity between the shepherd’s relationship to his flock, the attitude of the rulers to their subordinates, as well as the attitude of the Lord God to his people (Ps. 22: 1; Isa. 11:11; John 10:14; Heb. 13:20). ; 1 Pet. 2:25; Eph. 4: 11-15). Throughout biblical history, pastoral care, pastoral ministry, and pastoral science were formed. This article, in the context of the history of Christianity and the formation of the New Testament Church, examines the essence of religious pastoral care and the main aspects of the pastoral ministry of the clergy in the Orthodox Church. On the basis of the Holy Scripture the formation of the sacrament of the Priesthood, and the establishment of hierarchical degrees of bishop, presbyter, deacon in the Apostolic Church has been analyzed. It has been clarified how in a special way in the Church the vocation, election and consecration of worthy persons for pastoral service to God and people has been and is being carried out by the Holy Spirit. Important means of pastoral mediation between God and the faithful are considered. The most important aspects of the teachings of Scripture and the Church Fathers on the pastoral ministry of the priesthood are described. Liturgical service is highlighted as the basis of Christian doctrine. The main components of pastoral ministry are considered: evangelization and catechesis of society. This study focuses on the social ministry of the priesthood as an important factor in spiritual pastoral activity; chaplaincy in the army, spiritual assistance to people addicted to smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling, etc. The article notes the peculiarities of pastoral activity in the multi-religious society of modern Ukraine.
