Summary
This article is dedicated to Archpriest Yevlogiy Shyprykevych – a prominent representative of a well-known priestly family in Volyn, which combined a deep Orthodox faith with a pronounced national-patriotic position. His life path reflects the complex historical processes that took place in Ukraine in the 20th century, in particular the struggle to preserve church identity and spiritual independence. Born in Manevychchyna, Volyn region, he was formed from an early age in an environment where church service and love for his native land were integral components of his upbringing.
He received his education at the Volyn Theological Seminary in Kremenets, which at that time was one of the key centers of spiritual education in the region. Later, he continued his studies at the University of Warsaw, where he received a master’s degree in theology at the Orthodox department of the theological faculty, which testifies to the high level of his intellectual and theological training.
An important role in the formation of his worldview and church position was played by his marriage to the daughter of a prominent figure of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church – Archpriest Pavlo Pashchevsky, who was not only a clergyman, but also a military chaplain of the Army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. This family union strengthened his connection with the traditions of the Ukrainian church and national movement.
Archpriest Yevlogiy actively participated in the processes of the second revival of the UAOC, becoming one of its active participants. He worked closely with Archbishop Sicheslavskyi Gennady Shyprykevych, helping to build church structures in the Dnipropetrovsk region in the 1940s. His activities during this period contributed to the strengthening of the positions of autocephalous Orthodoxy in a difficult political situation.
During the Soviet persecution of the Church, he was persecuted and was forced to leave the Volyn diocese in 1952. He spent the next twenty-five years of his ministry outside Ukraine, in particular in the Rostov region, where he continued to perform pastoral duties. Despite forced emigration, he retained a deep love for his homeland and remained devoted to its spiritual traditions. The Rostov period of Archpriest Evlogii Shyprykevych’s life still remains poorly researched and requires further scientific study. It was there, in a foreign land, that his life path ended, leaving behind a significant spiritual legacy.
