Summary
Renowned as an active member of clergy of his time, prolific writer and editor, church warden and donator, after all, a missionary and enlightener of the peoples of Siberia, St. John (Maximovich) has been robbed of yet another of his talents. That would be a reference to his skill to succeed in the field of ecclesiatical diplomacy, the subject the significance of which remains relevant at the present time, when Ukrainian Orthodox diplomacy, even after it has been granted Thomos from the Mother-Church of Constantinopole, we still have to work really hard for the sake of churhc-wide perception of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The article analyzes the life of a famous hierarch from the standpoint of his ecclesiastical works, showing him as capable of negotiating at all levels. This refers to the active advocacy of the interests of the Kyievo-Pecherska Lavra in the difficult times of its history, the construction of the Lavra “branch” – Svensky Holy Dormition (Novopechersky) Bryansk Monastery. As separate entities the contacts are discussed, which he established with the Chernihiv and Tobolsk departments as the ruling bishop. Starting from the being appointment the head of the ancient cathedral at a council and the subsequent episcopal consecration at once to be archbishop (actually equating to the metropolitan) – all this and much more confirms his well-deserved respect. As a result of the conformity of his ecclesiastical merits, fruitful international activity not only at the level of Kyiv-Moscow (“Little Russia”-Russia), but also in relations with the monasteries of Athos, Jerusalem and Sinai, as well as the organization of an Orthodox mission to China. Still waiting for their attentive researcher are other aspects of the life of St. John (Maximovich), including his glorious family, labours in the spiritual and pedagogical field, translation and publishing, literary activity, relations with prominent historical figures of his time (both in the cleric and secular field), not to mention the theological heritage.
Key words: Ecclesiastical dilomacy, international activity, Kyievo-Pecherska Lavra, mission, sanctifier, St. John (Maximovich) of Tobolsk.
