Анотація

Salamina, the Argosaronic island, which in ancient times was the site of one of the greatest naval battles of all times, which determined the future of the then known world. In September of 480 BC the united fleet of the Greek cities fought in the straits of Salamis against the outnumbered fleet of the Persians. The same island offered the most in the revolution of 1821 with the focus on the Struggle in Salamina the Holy Monastery of Faneromeni Salamina. During the years of Ottoman rule, the Faneromeni Monastery became the center where the Greeks sent their children and their wives to be protected. There the wounded found refuge and care and collected the spoils of the battles. The numerous refugees – mainly women and children, the elderly and the wounded – fled chased by the rebel provinces of Atticovoiotia, Corinthia, and other islands to Salamis, the Monastery of Faneromeni and to makeshift accommodation in the surrounding hills. In the Monastery of Faneromeni, the chieftains gathered in order to discuss the course of the Battle, and they stored the food and the munitions they needed. An important figure of the Faneromeni Monastery for his action in the Struggle was the legendary Abbot and friendly Grig. Hatziathanasiou Kanellos who, together with an armed body from Salaminians, helped in the siege of Acrocorinth. The Holy Monastery of Faneromeni Salamis has been a religious and national center throughout the history of the Greek nation.
