Fundamental research on this issue includes Angelo Mercati’s works «Il sommario del processo di Giordano Bruno» (Summary of the Trial of Giordano Bruno) (1942) and new documents found by Luigi Firpo, which are discussed in his work «Il Processo di Giordano Bruno» (The Trial of Giordano Bruno) (1993). The article criticizes Giordano Bruno’s system of views, which is often referred to as scientific, and extrapolates the philosopher’s condemnation to the problem of the relationship between science and religion, and as a result, defines their coexistence as irreconcilably conflictual. An analysis of the sources demonstrates the absence of scientific views in Giordano Bruno and reveals the manipulative and one-sided nature of the claims about the conflict between science and religion.

Giordano Bruno was an ardent supporter of Nicolaus Copernicus’ teachings, but his understanding of Copernicanism was extremely superficial and largely erroneous. However, many contemporary researchers and scientists still consider him a visionary of his time who reinterpreted the concepts of ancient science and gave them a new tone. It should be noted that the philosopher expanded the boundaries of Copernicanism and developed the doctrine of the multiplicity of worlds or the cosmology of an infinite universe. Giordano Bruno is credited with the first sketch of an eternal, infinite, and boundless universe. In the context of Bruno’s theory, Copernicus’s theory is downgraded in rank; it turns out to be not a theory of the universe, but a theory of one of the many solar systems in the universe. However, Giordano Bruno can be considered a philosopher, poet, theologian, writer, etc. His works are devoid of mathematical formulas, astronomical calculations, geometric drawings, and scientific methodological research in general, and therefore cannot claim to be scientific. The well-known historical fact of Giordano Bruno’s condemnation by the Inquisition to death is often presented in the light of an acute and irreconcilable conflict between science and religion. Determining the correctness or falsity of such beliefs determines the relevance of the issue raised.

Key words: science and religion, theology, church, inquisition, Giordano Bruno, condemnation, conflict between science and religion.

References:

Firpo L.
